May Fair & Duck Races

A successful days racing was had by all in Luxborough on Monday 5th May 2008.

Fair weather during the May Bank Holiday brought out the punters for
the annual Duck Races.

Crowds of people descended on the pretty village of Luxborough on the Coleridge Way for the May Fair and Duck Races.  People travelled from as far as Tiverton to join the fun.

Pat McGlynn & Clare Pound had their work cut out to keep up with the demand
for duck ownership before the start of each race.

The Bouncy Castle and Skittles were as popular as ever.

Inside the hall the stalls laden with cakes, pies, jams, plants and books and all stalls did a roaring trade.

One of the highlights this year was a demonstration by
The Somerset Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers who showed children how to make pretty friendship bracelets.

Heathers Jewells, a member of Minehead Producers, was another another new feature of the Fair this year.  This stall provided a bright and cheerful display of quality jewellery at very reasonable prices.

The outcome was a good afternoon of entertainment which resulted in several hundred pounds being raised for the upkeep of the Village Hall and the Church.

Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Tribute Band - June 08 PDF Print E-mail

Johnny Cash Tribute Band The Ring of Fire at the Belladrum Festival

The Ring of Fire

The Ring of Fire played Johnny Cash numbers to a packed hall with true professionalism on Saturday 14th June.  They were well supported by great acoustic duo - The Yips.

Luxborough Village Hall put on a really good night once again.  People travelled down from London and up from Exeter as well from all the surrounding towns and villages. There were people from Tiverton, Wellington, Milverton, Minehead and Watchet to name but a few.  A good number of the tables were snapped up early by local residents.  The age range of the audience was quite extraordinary with teens to '80teens' enjoing the evening to the full.

Everyone finally got seated at tables in both front and back hall for supper.  Extra room at some tables was made for latecomers and more tables were brought out to accommodate unexpected sales of tickets on the door.  The Yips played us through our early supper with a variety of well known covers from some of the old classics.   We heard numbers from a variety of bands including The Eagles and The Everley Brothers with some very good harmonies.

The Ring of Fire came on after supper and started with professional enthusiasm which got everyone tapping their feet to those well known Cash numbers.  The applause came loud and clear after their first set.

The Yips once more entertained the audience during the interval with some more of those good old hits with the emphasis on good harmonies. The playlist included numbers that everyone knows the chorus to (if not the verse).  Plenty of singing along was heard to those well known tunes.

The second set from the Ring of Fire went down a storm.  The crowd was by now really in the swing of things and dancing was the order of the night.  The Ring of Fire proved to be a hit and their musical and vocal talents well received.Everyone we spoke to said they had really enjoyed it.

The food was included in the price and went down a treat - it was tasty, filling and just the ticket -  (sorry!)

Well done Luxborough for pulling such a great evening together.

This really was a great follow up to the John Etheridge & Chris Garrickjazz night and the Mad Woman in the Attick play - What will you come up with next?  We cant wait!

The "Mad Woman” returned - March 08

RECENT NEWS EVENT:

Following a highly successful tour in 2006, “The Mad Woman In The Attic”, the one-woman comedy show written by Coleford-based playwright, Sian Williams, returned to village halls in Somerset and Dorset

Saturday 15th March saw this amusing monologue in action. The village hall in Luxborough was once again packed with people from surrounding towns and villages.

The doors opened at 7pm and the hall quickly filled. That pre show anticipation was felt as people met up with friends over drinks, teas and coffee.

During the interval the lights went up to a general buzz of delighted chatter from the audience. Moving amonst groups of people socialising and enjoying their interval drinks and ices, many comments were heard praising the performance by Sally Sanders. It is no wonder the Boiling Kettle Theatre Company had been asked to tour this production a second time.

Loud laughter and chuckles abounded throughout this well acted performance. It was well written and had a great story line with many moving moments and some very funny lines.

The performance is a hilarious account of the ways in which a family tries to restrict the social life of one member of the family - a senior citizen with a sense of humour. It features Sally Sanders as Pat, the rebellious grand mother whose jokes and experiments in cyberspace have disconcerting results on an international basis.

Tickets for this are a must for anyone with a granny or parent creeping towards senior citizenship - you'll never see a mature cyclist near a traffic speed camera in the same light again.

Chris Garrick and John Etheridge played Luxborough! Print E-mail
A great evening of contemporary jazz and classical guitar.

Sell out success for Luxborough !

The John Etheridge and Chris Garrick evening on Thursday 17th January was a resounding success. It was a full house with a waiting list in operation for any extra tickets.

The feedback has been exceptional, and people came from far and wide for this event. It was an excellent night. The musicians were amazing and the evening really did turn out to be as advertised 'an intimate and truly memorable night'. There were plenty of complimentary comments about the great food provided in the interval too.

At close of play, The Royal Oak Inn, Luxborough (just a few yards away), was full to bursting with the musicans and many of the enthusiastic audience.
